International Children's Games for Olympic Champions’ Prizes kicks off in Kazan

The International Children's Games for Olympic Champions’ Prizes (11th Alexander Popov Cup) kicked off in Kazan. The 11th Alexander Popov Cup combines six sporting events. The athletes will compete for prizes in Greco-Roman wrestling (Alexander Karelin prize), handball (Igor Lavrov prize), skiing (Alexander Legkov prize), rhythmic gymnastics (Daria Shkurikhina prize), synchronized swimming (Svetlana Romashina prize), swimming (Alexander Popov prize).

The Alexander Popov Cup takes place at the following venues: Burevestnik Swimming Pool (swimming, synchronized swimming); Burevestnik Athletic Stadium (skiing); Academic and Laboratory Building of the Volga Region State Academy of Physical Culture, Sport and Tourism (Greco-Roman wrestling); Gymnastics Centre (rhythmic gymnastics); Miras Sports Complex (handball). Admission to the tournament is free. 

On 5 December, the first training sessions of the participants of the International Children's Games started. About 500 athletes from Russia, Serbia, Belorus, Moldova, Germany, and Kazakhstan take part in the swimming tournament. 17 Masters of Sports, and 177 Candidate Masters of Sports compete for medals.

The opening ceremony of the tournament was held at the Burevestnik Swimming Pool. Four-time Olympic Gold Medallist in swimming, Companion of Honour and Member of the International Olympic Committee Alexander Popov, Minister of Sport of the Republic of Tatarstan Vladimir Leonov, and Rector of the Volga Region State Academy of Physical Culture, Sport, and Tourism Yusup Yakubov took part in the ceremony. 

Just after the swimming sessions, an Olympic medallist in skiing Alexander Legkov, and Olympic champion Nikita Kryukov hosted a workshop for the participants of the tournament at the Burevestnik Athletic Stadium.

Then the opening ceremony of the rhythmic gymnastics tournament took place. Daria Shkurikhina gave a welcoming speech and greeted all participants of the Alexander Popov Cup.

An Olympic medallist in handball Andrey Lavrov, two-time Olympic champion Alexander Tuchkin, Olympic champions Lev Voronin, and Stanislav Kulinchenko hosted a workshop for young handball players at the Miras Sports Complex.

The 11th Alexander Popov Cup will be organized with support from the Government of the Republic of Tatarstan. Samsung Electronics Rus Company, adidas Russia, and CIS have been the partners and “friends” of the Alexander Popov Cup for several years. Gazprom PAO global energy company will become a title partner of the tournament in 2018. Match TV channel will provide information support. “Match! Our sport” channel will broadcast the Children’s Games for the first time.
