Rugby Europe Women’s Sevens Olympic Games Qualification Tournament will take place at the Central Stadium in Kazan on 13-14 July gathering together 12 national teams. The winner automatically secures its ticket to Olympics 2020 to be held in Japan. Silver and bronze medalists will continue competing in the tournament’s next round called Repechage.
The list of main participants of the tournament was announced during the first leg of the Rugby Europe Women’s Sevens Series in France on 29-30 June, where Team Russia ranked second after having lost to the hosts in the finals. Winners from 5 other European divisions got to participate in the Kazan qualification tournament. As a result, Russia is receiving teams from France, Ireland, Spain, England, Poland, Italy, Germany, Moldova, Czech Republic, Romania, and Sweden.
Visitors will enjoy a fascinating sports show and many other additional activities, including the children’s’ trampoline playground with an obstacle course, giant chess, game area (featuring a rugby PlayStation game), rugby gate, where each visitor can try to score a goal, and prize draw. Admission to the tournament is free for spectators.
While the Rugby Europe Women’s Sevens Grand Prix Series have been taking place in the capital of Tatarstan since 2015, Kazan is hosting an Olympics qualification tournament for the first time. Team Russia was the winner of the Rugby Europe Women’s Sevens Grand Prix Series held in Kazan in 2017 and 2018.
