The European Junior Swimming Championships are taking place in the capital of Tatarstan on 3-7 July 2019. For the first time the Aquatics Palace in Kazan is hosting the tournament in which 523 athletes (male athletes aged 15-18 and female athletes aged 14-17) from 42 countries are expected to participate.

All of the young competitors are the prospective members of national teams at the upcoming 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. The five-day competition programme features 34 individual events (free style, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, and IM) and 8 mixed relays in a 50m swimming pool.

“As I have already told on the eve of the LEN European Junior Diving Championships that have taken place recently, I was sure everything would be at the highest level, and now I can tell for sure it was. Juniors are of huge importance for us, they are the future of our sport. And it is very important to create favourable conditions for the future sports stars. I am sure that the swimming championships will be delivered at the highest level as well, since they are handled by a professional team,” noted Marco Birri, Operations Manager at LEN.

“Competitions at the Aquatics Palace are always delivered to all our requirements, and I am sure that both visitors and sportspeople, who already feel at home here, have noted the quality of the event organization. All countries that have made it to the finals are very strong rivals, and competition here will be keen, intensified traditionally by boys and girls from national teams of Germany and Italy, as well as by new strong athletes from teams Poland and Hungary. The ten European nations score very impressive results. But all the participants are willing to score at their best, so we expect the battle to be tense”, President of the All-Russian Swimming Federation Vladimir Salnikov told journalists.

Sports Minister of the Republic of Tatarstan Vladimir Leonov greeted everyone at the opening of the European Junior Diving Championships with a welcome speech.

“We are deeply honoured to host this tournament. In fact, Kazan is the national capital of aquatic sports, since the city has been hosting numerous major international competitions, jointly with our friends representing various sports associations, including LEN. We are proud to be the venue of an event gathering together young athletes from all over the Old World in the capital of Tatarstan. We are well aware of the fact that they are very promising sportspeople, and, of course, we will support all of them from the stands,” told the minister.
