On January 25, during the meeting with President of the International Swimming Federation (FINA) Dr. Julio C. Maglione and FINA Executive Director Cornel Marculescu at the Kazan City Hall, Mayor of Kazan Ilsur Metshin offered due recognition to the FINA executives’ contribution to the preparation and delivery of the 16th FINA World Championships. According to the Mayor, last year’s world aquatics tournament put Kazan into the global limelight.
Present at the meeting also were Tatarstan’s Minister of Youth Affairs and Sport Vladimir Leonov and Deputy Director General of the Directorate for Sports and Social Projects Ranko Tepavcevic.
Ilsur Metshin thanked the FINA executives for the support given to the city in Shanghai (CHN) in 2011 when the decision was made at the FINA Bureau to hold the 2015 FINA World Championships in Kazan (RUS). For his part, Julio С. Maglione mentioned that the 2015 edition of the World Aquatics Championships was the best in the history of the competitions. According to the FINA President, sporting events held in the capital of Tatarstan can compete with the Olympic Games in terms of their importance and size.
The meeting attendees also expressed hope that the World Aquatics Championships will not be the last project implemented jointly with FINA.
The 16th FINA World Championships were held in Kazan on July 24-August 9, 2015. The tournament brought together 2,413 athletes and 1,495 officials representing 190 nations. A record number of 75 medal events were contested across six disciplines.
