Top executives of the International Swimming Federation (FINA) – FINA President Dr. Julio C. Maglione and FINA Executive Director Cornel Marculescu –are on a visit to Kazan on January 23-25. On Sunday, January 24, they were honoured by President of the Republic of Tatarstan, Rustam Minnikhanov, during an official ceremony at the Kazan Kremlin.

On February 16-21, Kazan will become a host for yet another sporting event. The sports capital of Russia is gearing up to host two badminton tournaments at once: European Badminton Men’s and Women’s Team Championships and European Badminton U15 Championships. This year’s tournaments will be played at the Gymnastics Centre, where the 2014 Intersport European Championships were successfully staged.

Kazan’s experience of hosting international sporting events is strongly sought after in the lead-up to the 5th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games (AIMAG) in 2017 in Ashgabat (TKM). To study this experience, the Turkmenistan delegation arrived in Kazan on January 17-20.

The 2015 FINA World Championships were named the Sporting Event of the Year while the Kazan Arena Stadium, which had hosted the Sporting Event of the Year, received the Sports Venue of the Year Award.  These are the results of the 2nd edition of Sports Facilities: Year in Review Annual Award Ceremony, an event that was founded by the Sports Facilities magazine.

A presentation of GTO ambassador certificates took place at Russia’s Ministry of Sport in Moscow on December 14. Famous athletes, public figures and media representatives received the certificates from Russia’s Sport Minister Vitaly Mutko.

The Volga Region State Academy of Physical Culture, Sports and Tourism is one of Russia’s 15 higher education institutions where volunteer centres for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ will be created. In a single day, 11 host cities threw open the doors of their volunteer centres that welcomed today their first visitors.

In the summer of 2015, 2,212 volunteers representing the Republic of Tatarstan, 20 regions of the Russian Federation and 10 foreign countries lent their time and effort to help the organisers stage the best FINA World Championships ever. The army of Tatarstan volunteers included 1,697 residents of Kazan and other cities and towns of the republic. Volunteer managers have recently summed up the results of their team’s work during the championships and selected top 100 volunteers. A presentation of letters of gratitude was held on December 5, International Volunteer Day, and saw in attendance Tatarstan’s Minister of Youth Affairs and Sport, Vladimir Leonov, and Deputy Director General of the Executive Directorate for Sports Projects, Alexander Karpov.
