On 18 February, a cooperation agreement was signed at the Krasnoyarsk Economic Forum between the Directorate for Sports and Social Projects and the Executive Directorate of the 29th Winter Universiade 2019 in Krasnoyarsk. The parties agreed on joint development and implementation of projects aimed at involving young people in the preparation for the 2019 Winter Universiade. The document was signed by Deputy Director General of the Directorate for Sports and Social Projects, Alexander Karpov, and Director of the Executive Directorate of the Winter Universiade 2019, Maxim Urazov.

The Badminton Centre opened in Kazan on February 13. The venue is located on the premises of the Kazan Tennis Academy. The opening ceremony was attended by President of the Republic of Tatarstan, Rustam Minnikhanov. Special guests at the event were Badminton World Federation (BWF) President and member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Poul-Erik Høyer Larsen, President of the National Badminton Federation of Russia Sergey Shakhray, Minister of Youth Affairs and Sport Vladimir Leonov, Mayor of Kazan Ilsur Metshin and other officials.

In 2017, Kazan is about to play host to the 6th International Conference of Ministers and Senior Officials Responsible for Physical Education and Sport (MINEPS VI). This was announced today in a letter from UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova to the Ministry of Sport of the Russian Federation. The decision was made after UNESCO representatives had visited Kazan in December 2015 to inspect the city’s potential to host the upcoming conference.

The "Festival of Champions" is coming, which brings together the best teams of the continents. Along with Moscow, St. Petersburg and Sochi, Kazan crossed the 500 days mark before the start of the FIFA Confederations Cup, which will be staged in these four cities from 17 June to 2 July, 2017. The importance of staging the 2018 FIFA World Cup™ for the host country, and how the capital of Tatarstan is preparing for it, were mentioned at a press briefing on 4 February at the Republican Press and Mass Communications Agency. Participants of the briefing were State Secretary and Deputy Minister of Sport of the Russian Federation Natalya Parshikova, Deputy Minister of Youth Affairs and Sport of the Republic of Tatarstan Khalil Shaikhutdinov, and the head of the division for preparation of venues and organisation of events in the host city of Kazan for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Azat Kadyrov.

The 27th FINA World Championships that had been held last summer in Kazan was named the best event in the history of the International Swimming Federation (FINA). The final report on results of the past 2015 FINA World Championships in Kazan was presented at the FINA Bureau meeting on January 30 in Budapest (HUN). The meeting was chaired by FINA President Dr. Julio С. Maglione and FINA Executive Director Cornel Marculescu. Present on the part of the Russian delegation at the event were Tatarstan’s Minister of Youth Affairs and Sport Vladimir Leonov, Director General of the Directorate for Sports and Social Projects Azat Kadyrov, his deputy Ranko Tepavcevic and other officials.

During the meeting with President of the International Swimming Federation (FINA) Dr. Julio C. Maglione and FINA Executive Director Cornel Marculescu at the Kazan City Hall, Mayor of Kazan Ilsur Metshin offered due recognition to the FINA executives’ contribution to the preparation and delivery of the 16th FINA World Championships. According to the Mayor, last year’s world aquatics tournament put Kazan into the global limelight.

On Sunday, January 24, they were honoured by President of the Republic of Tatarstan, Rustam Minnikhanov, during an official ceremony at the Kazan Kremlin.
