Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Olga Golodets and Tatarstan President Rustam Minnikhanov met with members of the WorldSkills International (WSI) Board of Directors at the Kazan Kremlin today. Present at the meeting were Simon Bartley, Mayor of Kazan Ilsur Metshin and Director of the Department of the State Policy in Professional Education and VET at Russia’s Ministry of Education and Science Natalia Zolotareva, WorldSkills Russia CEO Robert Urazov and others. The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the 45th WorldSkills Competition 2019 was signed during the meeting in Kazan.

A meeting of the WorldSkills International Board of Directors started today, March 8, in Kazan. Present at the meeting were President of WorldSkills International (WSI) Simon Bartley, WSI Chief Executive Officer David Hoey, members of the Board of Directors and the WSI Secretariat. On March 9, a project session involving the WSI Secretariat will kick off to discuss the preparation for the world competition. It will continue until 15 March.

Yana Churikova, a popular TV presenter and an Ambassador of the Russian National GTO Health and Fitness Programme, has successfully passed all the GTO tests. The event was held at the Moskvich Specialised Children and Youth Sports School of the Olympic Reserve. Churikova performed the tests of her age grade, that included running, pulling-up from a hang position on a high bar, long jumping, flexibility test, etc. Her results correspond to the gold GTO pin.

On 18 February, a cooperation agreement was signed at the Krasnoyarsk Economic Forum between the Directorate for Sports and Social Projects and the Executive Directorate of the 29th Winter Universiade 2019 in Krasnoyarsk. The parties agreed on joint development and implementation of projects aimed at involving young people in the preparation for the 2019 Winter Universiade. The document was signed by Deputy Director General of the Directorate for Sports and Social Projects, Alexander Karpov, and Director of the Executive Directorate of the Winter Universiade 2019, Maxim Urazov.

At the second stage of implementation of the Russian National GTO (Ready for Labour and Defence) Programme, the list of Russian regions has been approved, where all the categories of the population will be able to officially take the GTO tests this year.

The Badminton Centre opened in Kazan on February 13. The venue is located on the premises of the Kazan Tennis Academy. The opening ceremony was attended by President of the Republic of Tatarstan, Rustam Minnikhanov. Special guests at the event were Badminton World Federation (BWF) President and member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Poul-Erik Høyer Larsen, President of the National Badminton Federation of Russia Sergey Shakhray, Minister of Youth Affairs and Sport Vladimir Leonov, Mayor of Kazan Ilsur Metshin and other officials.

In 2017, Kazan is about to play host to the 6th International Conference of Ministers and Senior Officials Responsible for Physical Education and Sport (MINEPS VI). This was announced today in a letter from UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova to the Ministry of Sport of the Russian Federation. The decision was made after UNESCO representatives had visited Kazan in December 2015 to inspect the city’s potential to host the upcoming conference.

The "Festival of Champions" is coming, which brings together the best teams of the continents. Along with Moscow, St. Petersburg and Sochi, Kazan crossed the 500 days mark before the start of the FIFA Confederations Cup, which will be staged in these four cities from 17 June to 2 July, 2017. The importance of staging the 2018 FIFA World Cup™ for the host country, and how the capital of Tatarstan is preparing for it, were mentioned at a press briefing on 4 February at the Republican Press and Mass Communications Agency. Participants of the briefing were State Secretary and Deputy Minister of Sport of the Russian Federation Natalya Parshikova, Deputy Minister of Youth Affairs and Sport of the Republic of Tatarstan Khalil Shaikhutdinov, and the head of the division for preparation of venues and organisation of events in the host city of Kazan for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Azat Kadyrov.
