About championships

The European Judo Championships have been held since 1951. Until 1975 only men were participating in these competitions. Since 1975 women also began taking part in the Championships. In 2012, the Russian city of Chelyabinsk played host to this tournament.

For the first time in its history, Kazan was granted the right to play host to one of the most prestigious and top-rated continental judo competitions. Individual and team competitions were held on four tatamis of the Tatneft Arena Sports Palace. The tournament’s grand opening ceremony was attended by President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin.

The Kazan tournament was one of the qualifying events for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro (BRA) and brought together the world’s best judokas. Athletes representing 46 nations participated in the tournament; several thousands of guests visited the event.

16 medal events were contested: seven sets of medal in the men’s and women’s individual events and one set of medals in each team competition.
